- In the Watershed, mountain pepperweed has been collected fairly often from a variety of habitats, such as montane grassy slopes or yucca and pinyon foothills—more commonly from the west side of the Valley. It has also been found in ruderal ground, within town limites. Although not yet collected from the Culebras, it does follow the Rio Grande drainage into New Mexico—and on down it to the Big Bend country of Texas. Note that this species is extremely variable in shape of leaf and fruit, as well as in other characters. For determination, the best recourse to is check all the key characters: non-auriculate upper stem leaves, unwrinkled fruit, woody base (perennial), upper stem leaves linear and lower ones pinnately lobed. The style can be exserted beyond he apical notch or not.
