- Although purple skeleton mustard is primarily a Southwest desert plant of Arizone and New Mexico, it has been collected regularly in the foothills of the southern half of the Watershed, and from the San Luis Hills in the Lower Basin. Hesperidanthus linearifolius follows the Rio Grande drainage through New Mexico and on down to the Big Bend country of Texas. Over the years, botanists have assigned this species to at least six genera in the mustard family: Hesperidanthus, Schoenocrambe, Sisymbrium, Streptanthus, Thelypodiopsis, and Thelypodium
