- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. In the Watershed, western wallflower has been recorded from open sandy and grassy habitats and also from the pinyon-juniper zone, in Conejos, Costilla, Hinsdale, Mineral, Rio Grande, and Saguache counties. Experts, however, disagree on the distinction of Erysimum asperum and E. capitatum. BONAP shows E. asperum in the counties indicated here, but Ackerfield shows it growing only in the eastern plains of Colorado. Weber and Wittman say the two species hybridize in the San Luis Valley. I have not seen any of the several iNaturalist observations of "Erysimum asdperum" from the Watershed that are definitive. The USA range is Rockies with extensions into the western Great Plains. BONAP shows it following the Rio Grande drainage through New Mexico to the Mexican border but not farther into Texas.
