- In the Watershed (as in Colorado as a whole), there are few collections of Mertensia alpina, possibly in part due to its high-elevation habitat. It has been found on the alpine slopes of peaks in the Sawatch Range, the south San Juans in Rio Grande and Conejos Cos, and the north Cristos in the vicinity of Mt. Blanca. The USA distribution is the Rocky Mountains, from Montana to northern New Mexico (where it has been recorded from Taos, Colfax, and Santa Fe counties). The species follows the Rio Grande drainage only as far as Santa Fe Co, New Mexico.
