Salt heliotrope is locally common around dried lake strands and alkali playas of the Upper Basin. The 1875 date comes from Brandegee’s observations, who found it in large strands around San Luis Lake, just as it is found there today. Both varieties of Heliotropium curassavicum (var. obovatum [Heliotropium spatulatum] and var. oculatum) have been recorded from the same Basin locations, suggesting the two may integrade in the Watershed. Currently, some authorities have subsumed var. oculatum into var. obovatum. So Allred et al (2020) record var. obovatum and var. currassavicum [Heliotropium xerophilum] from northern New Mexico but not var. oculatum. Heliotropium curassavicum is present in all Western USA states, and follows the Rio Grande drainage to the Gulf of Mexico.
