- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Sow thistle has been recorded a total of 8 times in the Watershed, the earliest dating 1973. So far Sonchus asper has proved a Basin plant, although the Valley View Hot Springs collection and the collection west of Mt Blanca (Dixon, 1984) show the plant has adapted to other habitats in the Watershed. More Watershed occurrences may be expected, in part since it is a very common species throughout New Mexico. This enterprising exotic now occupies every state of the USA, and has been recorded from the full length of the Rio Grande drainage, all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. Note that the surest distinction between S. asper and S. oleraceus is the achene, which is unwrinkled in the first and wrinkled in the second.
