- Senecio spartioides is recorded from shrubland of the Upper Basin, but not of the Lower Basin. It prefers foothills but does range up into the montane. Occasionally it can be found on ruderal ground and inside city limits. Primarily it is a USA Southwest plant that extends into Wyoming and the western Great Plains. BONAP shows occurrences in the Big Bend country of Texas, but otherwise the species follows the Rio Grande drainage only through New Mexico down to the Mexican border counties. Some authorities (e.g., Ackerfield 2022) separate S. spartioides (with largely entire leaves) and S. multicapitatus (with leaves partedinto filiform lobes). FNA says that that the character "is inconsistent throughout the range and recogition of the two entities is all but impossible to maintain."
