- Senecio atratus is a common forest and meadow plant of the montane and subalpine, often found alongside roads, in all Watershed mountain ranges. Its USA distribution—the mountains of Colorado, Utah, southwest Wyoming, and north New Mexico—overlaps with that of Senecio amplectens. But unlike S. amplectens, S. atratus normally does not reach up into the alpine. In New Mexico it follows the Rio Grande drainage only as far as Santa Fe Co.
