- Mountain tail-leaf prefers open, rocky foothill habitat, sometimes by outcrops as in Penitente Canyon (Saguache Co), sometimes in flat alluvial soil, as in the southern approach to the Great Sand Dunes, sometimes alongside roads as on Hwy 285 south of Saguache. Pericome caudata (monospecific in the USA) follows the Rio Grande down through New Mexico into the Big Bend country of Texas. Its USA distribution is east-central California, central Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, central and southeast Colorado, and bits of west Texas.
