- Heterotheca hirsutissima (Nesom 2020) will key out in Semple (FNA) as H. villosa var. nana and perhaps var. minor. It is characterized by lack of bracts subtending the flower head, stem vestiture of an understory of short hairs and an overstory of longer spreading hairs, and leaves glandular on both surfaces. The species is very common in the Watershed, on both sides of the Valley, frequenting mid-elevation, xeric habitats. Its USA distribution is centered in Colorado and New Mexico, as well as contingent areas of Arizona, Wyoming, Nebraska, and the Panhandle of Texas. The species follows the Rio Grande drainage at least as far as Valencia Co, New Mexico. Note that in his recent revision of Heterotheca, Guy Nesom (2020) elevates some previous varieties of H. villosa to species level. One is H. hirsutissima, which embraces H. villosa var. nana and perhaps var. minor. Also note that in Nesom's revision—which this inventory accepts—H. villosa does not occur in the Watershed.
