- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS For Heterotheca villosa var. foliosa, there are only a few locations in the Watershed: the Great Sand Dunes (2000, 2009); Deep Creek trail south of Creede (Mineral Co, 2004); North Clear Creek (Hinsdale Co, 2004). H. villosa var. foliosa is characterized by long-hairy stems that are eglandular and leaf faces that are rather densely hairy (Semple FNA). For Colorado, Ackerfield (2022) shows a distribution running down the Front Range and extending, spottily, westward. Allred et al. (2020) do not report it from New Mexico. Semple (FNA) gives a loose distribution for the USA: "mountains and west prairies." Note that most authorities make this taxon a variety of Heterotheca villosa, but Ackerfield (2016, 2022) raises it to species level.
