- Showy fleabane is a common Erigeron in the montane, although it does extend into the subalpine. It likes the protection of forest edges. Although not collected from the Culebras, no doubt it is present there, judging from New Mexico records. The one Basin occurrence was just east of the San Luis Lakes, collected in 2008. Erigeron speciosus is present in all Western USA states, except for California, up to the Canadian border. In New Mexico, it follows the Rio Grande drainage to the Mexican border, but no farther down the drainage in Texas. E. speciosus and E. subtrinervis can be confused. But E. speciosus has phyllaries that are glabrous or nearly so, and E. subtrinervis has hirsute phyllaries. The three leaf veins of the second ("subtrinervis") is a difficult trait to interpret. A better trait is the hairiness of the leaf veins in E. subtrinervis.
