- In herbaria there are many vouchers labeled "Erigeron pumilus" from the Watershed, but they may all need to be reviewed. The distinction between E. pumilus, E. concinnus, E. engelmannii, and E. vetensis is difficult (Nesom 1983). In Ackerfield's distribution (2022), E. pumilus is shown for all Watershed counties, following the vouchers in SEINet. Yet BONAP (2022) indicates only Costilla and Alamosa counties, perhaps following Nesom 1983, whose distribution map of E. pumilus apparently shows only the northeast part of the Watershed for that species. (Hogan & Elliot 2022) record it from the lower elevations of the North Cristos wilderness area. In BONAP the USA distribution is all Western states except for Arizona and New Mexico, yet—to demonstrate the taxonomic difficulties—Allred et al. (2020) show E. pumilus var. pumilus from the seven northwestern counties of New Mexico, including Rio Arriba and Taos. Note that in Allred et al. (2020), the key separating E. pumilus, E. concinnus, and E. engelmannii requires microscopic inspection of the disk floret corollas. For a comprehensive review of E. pumilus, see Great Basin Fire Science (2024).
