- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Cainville thistle has one Watershed voucher, by Osier Road west of Antonito in a habitat of willows, grasses, and pine (Conejos Co, 1975). This voucher needs to be reviewed. Cirsium arizonicum prefers sandy soil, but it has also been found in the "pine-oak-juniper woodland community" (Heil et al., 2013). Note that Ackerfield does not show Conejos Co. The Conejos Co location is at the eastern edge of the USA range for C. arizonicum, which includes much of western New Mexico, including Rio Arriba and Taos counties. The flower follows the Rio Grande drainage through New Mexico to Mexico. Note that some authorities treat this taxon as Cirsium arizonicum (e.g., BONAP); Allred, et al. (2020) treat it as Cirsium arizonicum var. bipinnatum.
