- A montane and subalpine dusty-maidens, Chaenactis douglasii has been often collected from all mountain regions of the Watershed. It seems to have a proclivity to areas around passes (or maybe collectors do). It likes dry rocky slopes and washes, sometimes taking to ruderal ground, such as beside mountain roads. Of the two varieties found in the Watershed, C. douglasii var. alpina is more wide-spread, recorded from all mountain regions; whereas C. var. douglasii is centered mainly in the mountains north of Saguache and Villa Grove, with two collections from La Veta pass. The Watershed locations lie on the east edge of the USA distribution, which includes all states west of the Plains. But C. douglasii is present farther south in the Rio Grande drainage only as far as Rio Arriba and Taos counties of New Mexico.
