Comments
Big sage brush has been recorded from widely separated locations in the Watershed: North Rock Creek, east of Alder on Hwy 285 (Saguache Co); Poncha Pass (Saguache Co); around Ft. Garland (Costilla Co); the San Luis Hills and the foothills west of Antonito, including La Botica (Conejos Co); Great Sand Dunes NM. No doubt there are other locations that the Hispanics in the Valley, fond of their chamiso hediondo tea, have kept guarded. There are three subspecies present in the Watershed: subsp. tridentata, growing up to 9 feet tall or taller; subsp. vaseyana, smaller, with a flattish top; and subsp. wyomingensis (the least often recorded), with a spicy odor to crushed leaves. Big sage is wide spread through all Western states, and follows the Rio Grande drainage south most but not all the way through New Mexico.
