- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. So far there are five Watershed locations for foothill arnica, in the San Juans and the Culebras: near Spruce Hole (Conejos Co, 1987); S of Lookout Mountain (Conejos Co, 1983) ; 1.3 miles E of Grayback Mountain (Rio Grande Co, 1983); Lime Creek road (Mineral Co, 1981); and 2 miles S of San Luis (Costilla Co, 1998). The tufts of hair in the basal leaf nodes make this a species hard to misidentify. The reason for the paucity of collections may lie in the USA distribution. Except for a few records from the Chuska Mountains in northwest New Mexico, the Watershed occurrences lie at the farthest south, the main distribution covering the northern half of the West.
