- Of the eight species of Arnicas that have been recorded from the Watershed, heart-leaf is the most commonly collected. Vouchers of Arnica cordifolia come most often from the west side of the Watershed, much less so from the east side. It is one of the earliest plants to come back after a forest fire. In the USA the species is spread throughout the mountains west of the Plains. In New Mexico, it is present in the Rio Grande drainage only about halfway down the state, no farther down the drainage.
