- Semi-aquatic, water parsnip prefers slow Basin streams, but it can be found by lower montane creeks such as San Francisco Creek (Rio Grande Co) or Crestone Creek (Saguache Co). The plant is distributed throughout the USA, although only in scattered locales below the Mason-Dixon line. In New Mexico the only counties shown for Sium suave are Rio Arriba, Sandoval, and Bernalillo. The species follows the Rio Grande drainage no farther south.
