Fetid goosefoot has adapted to a range of xeric habitats in the Watershed, from sand dunes to lower montane woods, on both sides of the Valley. Depending on surrounding plants, it can grow into quite different shapes, from narrow and less than a foot high under trees to bushy and over two feet high in open ground. In the Watershed, native Dysphania graveolens is much more common than exotic D. botrys, but nation wide it is the reverse. D. graveolens is found only in Arizona and New Mexico, with a few locations n southern Utah, south Colorado, and the Big Bend region of Texas, the termination of its presence in the Rio Grande drainage. Note that iNaturalist and Plants of the World Online prefer the name Dysphania incisa.
