NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Of aridland goosefoot in the Watershed, there are only four records, widely separated: NW of Saguache (Saguache Co, 2003), WSW of Antonito (Conejos Co, 2004), and Ramaley's record labeled only "San Luis Valley, Alamosa" (Alamosa Co, 1936). Ackerfield (2015) shows Costilla and Hinsdale counties, with vouchers not found in SEINET. Chenopodium desiccatum can be found 8 miles W of Cochetopa Pass, not in the Watershed but only 11 miles west of Flaig's 2003 record from northwest of Saguache. Chenopodium dessicatum occurs in most Western USA states, the western Great Plains, much of Texas, and a scattering of locations farther east. It follows the Rio Grande drainage through New Mexico and Texas to the Gulf of Mexico. Note that the species falls very close to C. hians, C. atrovirens, and C. pratericola. Probably the seeds are required to separate the species with surety: C. desiccatum seed surface is "warty," that of C. hians, C. atrovirens, and C. pratericola "rugulose" or wrinkled. Benet-Pierce and Simpson call C. desiccatum "one of the most misidentified taxa in North America" (2014, p. 162).
