- The few Watershed records of Amaranthus powellii are from both sides of the Valley, one as early as 1971. But difficulties in identifying Amaranthus species generally may mean the plant is more wide spread than the vouchers show. For instance, currently in the town of Del Norte the species is the most common of Amaranthus, and in August and September nearly ubiquitous alongside gravel streets and dirt alleys. These locations which would add Rio Grande Co to the Watershed distribution indicated by Ackerfield (2022) and BONAP (2022). This native pigweed is recorded from all USA states west of the Great Plains, and, in a thinly scattered and adventive way, in all the other states. It is present in all but six counties of New Mexico, and follows the Rio Grande drainage to the Gulf.
