- The recent photorecord from Rio Grande Co is the only observation of slender pigweed from the Watershed, but the species is quite likely present elsewhere in the Valley. Allred et al. (2020) show it from all the northern counties of New Mexico, including those containing the Rio Grande drainage. This exotic has been recorded from all USA states, and observations follow the Rio Grande drainage sporadically to the Gulf. Amaranthus hybridus is quite variable and hybridizes with a number of other USA species, although none recored from the Watershed, however, it is relatively easy to determine: monoecious, with very short pistillate bracts (2 mm or less) and even shorter tepals. Note that there is no agreement on whether the species is native or exotic. FNA calls it a "riverside pioneer in North America"; Allred et al. (2020) say it is "native to eastern North America," presumably adventive elsewhere in the USA.
