- On the west side of the Watershed, lodgepole seems to have a patchy distribution, with the old Cochetopa pass and other locations in the south Sawatch range showing the most collections. On the east side of the Valley, Pinus contorta has been recorded only from around Veta Pass. Hogan and Elliot (2022) say their survey found the species is largely absent from the west slopes of the North Cristos, with only one collection from upper Dorsey Creek. The Watershed marks the extreme southeastern corner of the USA distribution of Pinus contorta, which covers all Western states except for Arizona and New Mexico. Locations around Osier Peak and Platoro in Conejos Co mark the farthest down the Rio Grande drainage this species is found.
