- Juniperus communis helps define the foothill ecosystem of the west of the Valley, but not so much the east. It grows both in open meadows and sparse woods. Common juniper is present in every state the USA West, as well as across the northern Great Plains into New England. It follows the Rio Grande drainage down to Sierra Co, but no farther.
