- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Native sedge (Carex vernacula) has been collected fairly often from the Watershed, but mostly from the South San Juans range. There are only two records elsewhere, from the North Sangre de Cristos. (The 1934 voucher from "between Alamosa and Monte Vista seems unlikely, and is not accepted by Ackerfield 2022.) Most of the occurrences are in the alpine, sometimes in snowmelt. In the lower USA, the distribution of Carex vernacula is scattered through the Rockies from southern Colorado to southern Montana, and from California northward, with uncommon occurrences in Oregon and Washington. The Watershed locations are the only ones in the Rio Grande drainage.
