- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Steven's sedge has been vouchered more than a dozen times around the Valley, from all mountain ranges except for the South Sawatch range. The Watershed habitat of Carex stevenii is fairly consistent, among shade and wet areas of aspen and mixed conifer woods in the montane or upper montane. In the lower USA states, the distribution centers around central Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, and northern New Mexico. The species follows the Rio Grand drainage only through the top two northernmost tiers of counties in New Mexico, no farther down stream.
