- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Analogue sedge, one of the few species of Carex that grows in the Watershed basin, has been vouchered a number of times from locations such as a muddy ditch in shrubland north of the Great Sand Dunes (Saguache Co, 2013), in pinyon-juniper grassland west of Monte Vista (Rio Grande Co, 1987), in moist sandy volcanic soil southwest of Las Mesitas (Conejos Co, 1987), and on a pond's edge a little north of the town of Alamosa (Alamosa Co, 1973). Carex simulata often grows in standing water, and tolerates alkaline conditions. In the lower USA, the distribution of this dioecious sedge is scattered around all Western states. It follows the Rio Grande drainage only a couple of counties into New Mexico, no farther down stream.
