- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Curly sedge (Carex rupestris) has only one vouchered location in the Watershed: on a dry alpine ridge at the head of Raspberry Canyon (Alamosa Co, 1998). Note that the two 1987 vouchers labeled "Costilla Co" are not locations in that county but in Huerfano Co a bit east of the Watershed. Carex rupestris is a cirumboreal sedge of the northern temperate and subarctic, considered endangered in many parts of its range because of climate change. In the lower USA, the species follows the Rocky Mountains from the Canadian border into New Mexico. Allred et al. (2020) say it has been found in New Mexico only in the northern Sangre de Cristos of Taos, Colfax, and Mora counties, but BONAP (2025) shows a more extensive range including Rio Arriba and San Miguel counties. Carex rupestris does not follow the Rio Grande drainage farther south.
