- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Chamisso sedge has been vouchered less than ten times from the Watershed, all from the South San Juan range. Carex pachystachya grows along forested streams in the montane, sometimes in willow carrs. In the lower USA, its distribution centers in California, Oregon, and Washington, and in the Rocky Mountains from Montana down through New Mexico. Allred et al. (2020) note only one New Mexico location, in Rio Arriba Co, but BONAP (2025) shows counties in the Rio Grande drainage down through the middle of the state—but no farther down stream. Note that the common name, "Chamisso sedge," derives not from the Spanish word but from the German botanist Adelbert von Chamisso (1781-1838).
