- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Black sedge (Carex nova) has been recorded fairly often from all mountain ranges of the Watershed, east and west. Its typical habitat is wet, alpine tundra, sometimes with exposed bedrock, but its vegetative range extends down into the montane (e.g., in silty loam among Picea engelmannii near Geban Creek (Saguache Co, 1984). In the lower USA, the presence ofCarex nova centers in Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah, with locations also in northeast Nevada and the Sangre de Cristo mountains of New Mexico. Carex nova follows the Rio Grande drainage into Santa Fe and Lincoln counties of New Mexico, no farther down stream.
