- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. In the Watershed, black alpine sedge has been vouchered from both the eastern and western mountain ranges but less than a dozen times. Carex nigricans may be more common than the SEINet record indicates since its habitat is tundra and often difficult of human access. In the lower USA, its distribution is California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and the Rockies from the Canadian border south. BONAP (2025) shows the species present in Rio Arriba Co, New Mexico, but no farther south.
