- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Smallwing hedge has been one of the most commonly collected sedges from the Watershed, found in all mountain ranges at the montane and subalpine vegetative zones. The habitat ranges from wet meadows to stream banks to mixed conifer woods. In the lower USA states, carex microptera has been recorded from nearly every county of the Western states, with locations also in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The species follows the Rio Grande drainage solidly through New Mexico, but not into Texas.
