- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Sheep sedge has been vouchered from the Garitas and the South San Juans, for instance along the Continental Divide one mile north of Lobo observation point over Wolf Creek pass (Mineral Co, 1996), near Adams Fork Creek west of Platoro (Conejos Co, 1945), in the Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge (Mineral Co, 2004), or near the Continent Divide trail north of Prospect Creek (Rio Grande Co, 1996). Usually the habitat is tundra meadows, but some locations are lower in coniferous woods. The distribution of Carex illota in the lower USA is all Western states with the exception of Arizona. Except for some uncommon collections in the New Mexico counties of Taos and Rio Arriba, bordering the Watershed, these Colorado locations would be the only ones in the Rio Grande drainage.
