- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. According to vouchers, gray sedge can be found occasionally in both the east and west mountain ranges, although it is much more common west of the Continental Divide in the San Juan River drainage. Carex canescens tends to grow in shady, wet stream sides at the montane level. In the USA, this circumboreal sedge occupies scattered locations in all Western states, and on eastward in the northern fourth of the nation into Maine and down the Appalachians—but not the northern Great Plains. In the Rio Grande drainage, it is common in New Mexico counties bordering the Watershed, but has not been recorded farther down stream.
