- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. In the Watershed, lesser blackscale sedge has been recorded, less than ten times, from the subalpine and alpine of the South San Juans. The habitat of Carex atrosquamas is rocky or gravelly slopes, sometimes next to streams. These records lie at the southern extreme of a species that follows the Rockies on up to the Canadian border (and through Canada into Alaska), with uncommon occurrences in Oregon and Washington. The records would be the only ones in the Rio Grande drainage.
