- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. In the Watershed, slenderbeak sedge has been vouchered only from the South San Juans: Deep Creek trail south of Creede (Mineral Co, 2010; and a few locations around the higher elevations of Archuleta and Conejos counties (1988-2023). Usually the habitat of Carex athrostachys is wet openings and meadows in woodlands in the higher montane zone. The USA distribution is similar habitats wide spread in all the Western states, with some uncommon occurrences in North and South Dakota. The species follows, spottily, the Rio Grande drainage through New Mexico, with only one location in Texas (Mount Livermore in Jeff Davis Co, 1936).
