- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Black and white sedge, recorded by a few intrepid collectors, grows on the rocky alpine slopes of all the mountain ranges of the Watershed, with the exception of the Culebras. Carex albonigra probably grows there as well, since it has been collected from the Sangre de Cristos of New Mexico (Taos and Colfax counties). In the USA, the species is distributed down the Rockies, with scattered locations in all Western states except for Oregon. The most southern location is Sierra Blanca Peak, New Mexico (Otero Co, 1995). Note that the common name reflects the scientific name (albo + nigra, "white and black"); the perigynium is dark brown and often tipped with white.
