NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Panicled bulrush has been vouchered fairly frequently from the Watershed, but only from the Upper Basin and the South San Juans. Scirpus microcarpus's habitat is varied, ranging from ditches to lake and creek sides to willow carrs to margins of wet meadows, from basin to montane. Its distribution in the USA is all Western states and farther eastward across the top fourth of the nation, from North Dakota to Maine. It follows the Rio Grande drainage through New Mexico, but is more common in the northern counties at higher elevations. S. microcarpus is a robust plant, growing up to five feet tall with an extensive rhizome system. In contrast, the achenes are tiny ("microcarpus"), less than 2 mm long.
