- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Softstem bulrush has been the most collected of bulrushes from the Watershed. Most are from the Basins, at the margins of lakes and ponds. But Schoenoplectus tabernaemontani does extend up into the montane along streams and lakes, sometimes growing in the water. It flourishes in the temperate zone all around the world. In the USA the species has been recorded from every state of the union. It follows the Rio Grande drainage, spottily, through New Mexico and Texas down to the Gulf of Mexico. Incidentally, the specific epithet derives from Jakob Theodor von Bergzabern, a prominent 16-century herbalist. In Latin "tabernaemontanus" means, roughly, tavern in the mountain, as does the German "Bergzabern."
