- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Common threesquare bulrush has been vouchered only from the San Luis Lakes area, the Baca National Wildlife Refuge, and marshes west of the Great Sand Dunes NPP. Quite likely Schoenoplectus pungens was more wide spread in the Valley before the drainage of marshes there. Also some early determinations of "Schoenoplectrus americanus" may be S. pungens. The species has been documented from every state of the USA, and follows the Rio Grande drainage through New Mexico and Texas to the Gulf of Mexico.
