NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. So far there are eight voucher locations for Olney's bulrush, all in the Upper Basin. Usually the habitat is edges of ephemeral lakes, the substrate sandy and alkaline, the associate plants rabbitbrush, greasewood, and saltgrass. The USA distribution of Schoenoplectus americanus covers all Western states and Oklahoma, with a scattering all along the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico seaboards. The species follows the Rio Grande drainage through New Mexico, but enters Texas in that drainage only at the very southwestern tip. Incidentally, this bulrush is called "Olney's" because Asa Gray has previously classified it as "Scirpus olneyi." Amerindians used the stems in basket making.
