- In the Watershed, bearded flatsedge has usually been found growing along streams, most often on banks above the floodplain of the Rio Grande. A recent occurrence was by a seasonal pond in an unused gravel pit (Rio Grande 2020). Cyperus squarrosus is a small sedge and may have often been overlooked by collectors. The species has been recorded from every state of the United States, as well as Canada and nearly all of South America, Africa, and India. It follows the Rio Grande drainage through New Mexico, and spottily on down through Texas to the Gulf of Mexico.
