- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Cyperus schweinitzii has been vouchered only once from the Watershed: in La Baca National Wildlife Refuge, 1.7 air miles southwest of Crestone, on a stabilized sanddune. This flatsedge prefers dry slopes and sandy soils, so the habitat is right. The species has been recorded from the Rocky Mountain states and the upper Midwest states. It follows the Rio Grande drainage through New Mexico, although more common in the northern half of the state, with one location in Texas down in the Big Bend region.
