- Of the four cliff ferns (Woodsia) found in the Watershed, Oregon cliff fern has been the most commonly collected, although not by much. Woodsia oregana usually grows in foothill/montane cliff crevices and ledges, often in shade with a north exposure—and sometimes in montane woods and alpine rocky slopes. The USA distribution covers all Western states, including the western edge of the Great Plains in North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Colorado. The species follows the Rio Grande drainage through New Mexico but not on into Texas.
