- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Slender lip fern has been vouchered less than ten times from the Watershed, but the locations are found in all ranges except for the Culebras. The habitat is much like that of Fendler's lip fern (Hemionitis fendleri): montane wooded slopes with rock crevices sheltering the plant. The USA distribution of Hemionitis gracilis, however, is much more extensive than that for H. fendleri: all Western states except for those of the Pacific coast, and other states extending east to the Mississippi river. The species follows the Rio Grande drainage solidly through New Mexico and on into Texas well beyond the Big Bend region. Note that in 2018 Maarten J. M. Christenhusz revived the genus Hemionitis to include a number of cheilanthoid ferns, including some in Myriopteris—a revision accepted by POWO.
