- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. So far there have been seven vouchered locations for Fendler's lip fern in the Watershed; e.g., ridge above Terrace Reservoir (Conejos Co, 2004); Mosca Creek just east of the Great Sand Dunes NPP (Alamosa Co, 154); area around Garcia Spring northwest of the town of Saguache (Saguache Co, 1999). The habitat is usually rocky lower-montane slopes in pinyon-juniper, plants lodged in water-retaining crevices. The center of the USA distribution of Hemionitis fendleri (the great majority of plants labeled "Myriopteris fendleri") is Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico. The species follows the Rio Grande drainage through New Mexico and on into Texas, but no farther than the Big Bend region. Note that in 2018 Maarten J. M. Christenhusz revived the genus Hemionitis to include a number of cheilanthoid ferns, including some in Myriopteris—a revision accepted by POWO.
