In the Watershed, Bolander's quillwort has been documented from a limited number of locations in the South San Juans: ponds near Elwood pass (Rio Grande Co, 2000), and high lakes in the north of Conejos Co and the south of Rio Grande Co. The alpine or subalpine habitat is persistent ponds and occasionally marsh. Probably Isoëtes bolanderi is more common in the Watershed, since the plant is small and often completely submerged, and its chive-like appearance can be mistaken for a grass. The species has been recorded from all Western USA states—by far the most wide spread of quillworts in the states. In the Rio Grande drainage, it is uncommon in New Mexico, found only in Rio Arriba Co. BONAP shows 55 species of quillwort in the lower USA. POWO records 211 world wide.
