NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Barley is grown in the San Luis Valley, where about 85% of Colorado's crop is produced, mostly for commercial brewing. Hordeum vulgare occasionally escapes but does not disperse far. It is found no farther than ditches alongside fields. Collectors may see it and not take the trouble to create vouchers. Only three have been collected: five miles south of the town of Alamosa (Alamosa Co, 1953); eight miles west of Del Norte just north of the Rio Grande, by a field cultivated for Coors Brewery (Rio Grande Co, 1972; two miles northeast of the town of Alamosa (Alamosa Co, 1976). Such escapes have been collected from all USA states except Alabama, and follow the Rio Grande drainage through New Mexico into the west tip of Texas.
