NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. SEINet finds four vouchers for "Elymus alaskanus," all under different names: Agropyron latiglume, Agropyron trachycaulum var. latiglume, and Elymus trachycaulus subsp. violaceus. The locations are Summitville mine (Rio Grand Co, 1987), Bennet Peak (Rio Grande Co, 1976), Poncha Pass (Saguache Co, 1968), and trail to Simmons Peak in the North Sangre de Cristo range (Saguache Co, 2022). The name for this taxon, Elymus alaskanus, has been challenged. Zhang, Salomon, and von Bothmer (2015, 2002) deconstruct it into a "complex." Allred et al. (2020) treat it as Elymus trachycaulus subsp. violaceus. Shaw 2008 treats it as Elymus violaceus. POWO restricts "Elymus alaskanus" to Alaska and Canada, and treats "Elymus alaskanus subsp latiglumis" as Elymus violaceus. Here I am following BONAP, which retains Elymus alaskanus as a viable species and consequently provides a useful USA distribution map that shows the center in Nevada with scattered locations in all Western states except for California. It also shows the species following the Rio Grande drainage through New Mexico but not into Texas.
